Did you do enough to leave your mark?

An homage to our favorite teen films of the ‘90s and early 2000s, Star Spangled Banner is an incredibly fun script that explores the dilemma of being a teen about to graduate high school - did you do enough to leave your mark?

Mia Boe has always lived under the shadow of her beautiful and more successful older sister, Jacqueline. When Mia’s identity is questioned during the senior superlatives she decides she must make her own name for herself with the little time she has left in high school. Recruiting her best friends, Mia makes a plan to pull off the greatest senior prank the school has ever seen.

In her friend group we have James, a high strung “try hard” who is desperate to lose her virginity. Cat, a burnout with a “mysterious aura” and the hots for her English teacher. Mickey, the “Man” of the campus who is trying to tell Mia how he really feels. And Evan, the “best friend” who has more moves than his friends will ever know… and a hot neighbor he wants to use them on.

Together this group does their best to navigate the last week of high school to make it one for the books and one them, and their classmates, will never forget!

As soon as we began our writing partnership we knew writing a raunchy teen comedy was a must. Luckily, Giovana already had the idea of Star Spangled Banner and a loveable friend group trying to leave their mark on their school brewing in her head.

Our shared love of teen comedies was one of the ways we were bonded together in college. So many nights ended with us in front of the TV watching one of our “stand by’s” - 10 Things I Hate About You, Can’t Hardly Wait, or American Pie. We love the witty dialogue, the angsty soundtracks, and of course the ridiculousness of 30 year old actors trying to pass as teens. We wanted to capture our favorite aspects of all of these films into Star Spangled Banner while bringing it into the modern day.

Mia and her friends are classic characters that you can root for. Relevant to the modern teenager who now must navigate the worlds of social media as well as the halls of high school, this script also packs a huge nostalgic punch for anyone who did their best just to survive the microcosm of society that exists in a high school.

The second script we completed together, packed with personal stories that happened to us and our friends in high school, Star Spangled Banner has been an ever changing organism of a script over the past three years. We finally found its footing and its voice as a TV pilot and we can’t wait to share all the laughs and the cringes with you.
